Coming Fall 2025 to Chestatee Farms – 1 Gallon Containers – $15.00
There’s something magical about a garden that speaks in whispers instead of shouts, where sunlight filters through tree canopies and cool shadows dance gently over the ground. In these spaces, subtle textures and movement become everything. Few plants deliver this elegance better than Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’ – or as it’s more commonly known, Japanese Forest Grass.
This fall, Chestatee Farms is thrilled to announce that golden Japanese Forest Grass will be available in 1-gallon containers for just $15.00. We’re growing them now with care and patience, so they’ll be ready to brighten your shade garden starting Fall of 2025.
🌿 A Quiet Star for the Shade

Native to the forested slopes of Japan, Japanese Forest Grass is a deciduous ornamental grass that thrives in the kind of shade-dappled understory that many other grasses simply can’t abide. Unlike its sun-loving cousins, it prefers soft, indirect light – ideal for deep shade, morning-only sun, or the cool slant of very late afternoon light. Harsh midday sun will cause its delicate blades to bleach or scorch, so placement is key.
This cultivar earns its name, which means “golden,” from its luminous foliage. Chartreuse-yellow leaves are finely striped with green, creating a waterfall effect as the plant arches outward like a graceful fountain. In the fall, the color subtly deepens with hints of copper and red, extending its seasonal interest well beyond summer.

☀️ Light & Placement
This shade-loving gem prefers deep shade to light dappled sun, receiving no more than 2-3 hours of gentle morning or late afternoon sun. Too much midday sun, especially Atlanta's hot rays, can scorch its foliage. If left in heavy shade, though, the yellow fades toward lime green—beautiful, but less dramatic.
🪴 Soil & Water: Consistency is Key
Japanese Forest Grass loves rich, moist, well-drained soil. Work in compost or leaf litter for depth and moisture-holding ability. Irrigate regularly during Atlanta's heat, especially the first summer, to prevent blade scorch. Good drainage matters: soggy, compacted clay soils will lead to decline. Light mulching with pine bark chips or hardwood much around the base keeps roots cool and soil evenly damp.

🧑🌾 Care Throughout the Year
Spring
Plant in Fall or early Spring with roots at soil level.
Apply a 2–3” layer of mulch, keeping it a finger’s width from the crown.
Prune spring cleanup (optional): remove winter-damaged blades to reveal fresh new growth
Summer
Watch for moisture stress—once or twice weekly watering during dry spells.
Use a balanced slow-release granular fertilizer in early summer, like 10-10-10 with minor elements; repeat midseason only if vigor wanes. Avoid over-fertilizing to maintain its natural form.
Fall
Blades take on coppery and red shades—leave foliage intact into late winter to enhance structure and protect the base
After frost or by early March, trim clean to just above ground.
Winter
In Zone 7, the clumps die back but stay insulated with mulch.
Reapply mulch in late fall to protect roots from freeze-thaw cycles at a depth of about 3 inches.
Spring (Yr 2 onward)
Older clumps may slowly expand; divide in early spring when they become crowded—every 3–5 years
Split into large divisions for best adaptability and regenerative growth.
🌱 Landscape Uses & Companions
This grass is perfect as groundcover under trees, draped over stone walls, or massed along paths. Its soft, flowing appearance plays well with darker-leaved hostas, ferns, heuchera, and astilbes. It also behaves wonderfully in containers or rock gardens—just remember to mulch or bring indoors overwinter if grown in containers, because their roots cannot be allowed to freeze hard.
✅ Why It Works in Atlanta Zone 7
Hardy to Zones 5–9, well suited for Zone 7 warmth
Thrives in Atlanta's shade and moisture, as long as it’s shielded from blistering sun.
Low-maintenance and deer-resistant, with minimal problems—no serious pests or diseases.
