The Tale Begins with the Plant
We offer healthy rhizome sections, each 2ā3 inches long with at least two "eyes" or buds. These are fibreless, tender varieties perfect for culinary use. We place them horizontally, eyes facing up, about 1ā2 inches deep in a rich, well-draining potting mix. Then comes a good soak of water, and plants are set in bright, indirect light, ideally between 70ā85āÆĀ°F

Potting Up: Soil & Containers

Spring & Summer: Growth Season
Once sprouted, about 3ā6 weeks after planting, the pots move outdoors or under indoor lights. They thrive in light shade or morning sun, avoiding extreme heat. Watering is key: keep soil moist but not soggy and maintain around 60ā70% humidity by misting or placing the pots on pebble trays.
Fertilizer Routine
Every 4ā6 weeks: organic liquid fertilizers, fish emulsion or seaweed extract.
At planting and mid-season: apply slow-release granular (5ā5ā5 or 7ā5ā10 NPK).
Top-dress annually: compost or worm castings.
These feed schedules support lush foliage and rich rhizome development.
Fall & Overwintering Indoors
As nights cool and daylight shortens, plants enter dormancyāleaves yellow and die back. Our customers have two winter options:
A. Dormant Dry Storage
Stop watering once leaves have yellowed but before the first freeze of the season.
Move pots to a bright, cool spot (50ā60āÆĀ°F).
Water just enough monthly to keep soil from drying completely.
Come late winter, resume light watering, and they bounce back
B. Continued Growth
Keep indoors in warmth (~70ā80āÆĀ°F) near sunny windows or under grow lights.
Maintain light feeding and watering (lower than during peak growth).
Provide humidity via pebble trays or misting.
Spring Again: Return & Repot
Once nighttime temps stay above 55ā60āÆĀ°F, move ginger and turmeric back outside. For crowded pots, spring is a good time to refresh soil or repot into a slightly larger container. This ensures robust rhizome growth in the next cycle.
Harvesting Rhizomes: A Rewarding Moment
Harvest time arrives when the foliage dies back, usually 8ā10 months after planting. Customers gently loosen soil, tip the pot, and lift rhizomes, rinsing off any dirt. They save the best pieces to replant and store the rest. Harvest options:
Baby tubers (5ā7 months): tender, low-fiber, ideal cooking size.
Mature harvests (8ā10 months): best for drying, powdering, or saving large pieces
Storing is simple: refrigerate fresh rhizomes up to 3ā6 months or freeze/freeze-slice for longer use

Common Challenges & Fixes
Root rot: ensure excellent drainage and proper watering.
Cold stress: keep soil above 50āÆĀ°F at all times.
Pests: outdoor snails/slugs; indoor mealybugs/mitesātreat with neem oil/insecticidal soap.
