Container-Grown Ginger & Turmeric 🌱

Every spring, our customers tell us they crave fresh ginger and turmeric but lack space or aren’t sure how to care for them. Here’s our story, along with their guide, on how to grow fibreless white edible ginger and turmeric in 1-gallon containers ($15 each), overwinter them indoors, and harvest bountiful rhizomes year after year.


The Tale Begins with the Plant

We offer healthy rhizome sections, each 2–3 inches long with at least two "eyes" or buds. These are fibreless, tender varieties perfect for culinary use. We place them horizontally, eyes facing up, about 1–2 inches deep in a rich, well-draining potting mix. Then comes a good soak of water, and plants are set in bright, indirect light, ideally between 70–85 °F

Potting Up: Soil & Containers

Our 1‑gallon pots, 12″ around and 6″ deep, are ideal for starter plants. Customers wanting to repot to a larger size should do so in spring only and fill them with a mix of:

  1. Potting soilĀ for structure

  2. Compost or aged manureĀ for nutrients

  3. Perlite, coarse sand, or coco coirĀ for aeration

  4. pH around 6.0–7.0Ā to ensure healthy growth

This blend provides food, water retention, and excellent drainage.


Spring & Summer: Growth Season

Once sprouted, about 3–6 weeks after planting, the pots move outdoors or under indoor lights. They thrive in light shade or morning sun, avoiding extreme heat. Watering is key: keep soil moist but not soggy and maintain around 60–70% humidity by misting or placing the pots on pebble trays.


Fertilizer Routine

  • Every 4–6 weeks: organic liquid fertilizers, fish emulsion or seaweed extract.

  • At planting and mid-season: apply slow-release granular (5‑5‑5 or 7‑5‑10 NPK).

  • Top-dress annually: compost or worm castings.

    These feed schedules support lush foliage and rich rhizome development.


Fall & Overwintering Indoors

As nights cool and daylight shortens, plants enter dormancy—leaves yellow and die back. Our customers have two winter options:

A. Dormant Dry Storage

  • Stop watering once leaves have yellowed but before the first freeze of the season.

  • Move pots to a bright, cool spot (50–60 °F).

  • Water just enough monthly to keep soil from drying completely.

  • Come late winter, resume light watering, and they bounce back

B. Continued Growth

  • Keep indoors in warmth (~70–80 °F) near sunny windows or under grow lights.

  • Maintain light feeding and watering (lower than during peak growth).

  • Provide humidity via pebble trays or misting.


Spring Again: Return & Repot

Once nighttime temps stay above 55–60 °F, move ginger and turmeric back outside. For crowded pots, spring is a good time to refresh soil or repot into a slightly larger container. This ensures robust rhizome growth in the next cycle.


Harvesting Rhizomes: A Rewarding Moment

Harvest time arrives when the foliage dies back, usually 8–10 months after planting. Customers gently loosen soil, tip the pot, and lift rhizomes, rinsing off any dirt. They save the best pieces to replant and store the rest. Harvest options:

  • Baby tubers (5–7 months): tender, low-fiber, ideal cooking size.

  • Mature harvests (8–10 months): best for drying, powdering, or saving large pieces

Storing is simple: refrigerate fresh rhizomes up to 3–6 months or freeze/freeze-slice for longer use

Common Challenges & Fixes

  • Root rot: ensure excellent drainage and proper watering.

  • Cold stress: keep soil above 50 °F at all times.

  • Pests: outdoor snails/slugs; indoor mealybugs/mites—treat with neem oil/insecticidal soap.

  • Humidity & crowding: mist, use trays, provide air movement, repot when roots fill up
